How to Tie a Sash

How to tie a sash must be one of the most difficult things to do in Kung Fu when you first start. This is the way I was taught. I do however remember that one of the children I used to teach had a much easier method based on doing a one sided bow which worked just as well. As long as the end result is OK (ie with the sash as wide as possible with grade marks on the inside, tight enough that it doesn't fall down and with the loop slightly shorter than the the "tails") then do it however you like.

Step 1 : Find the centre of the sash and hold it in front of yourself

Step 2 : Put the centre of your sash into the small of your back and the use both hands to bring the ends to the front. Ensure that the grading marks on on the side closest to the body.

Step 3 : Stretch the sash around your body so that you have one long end (in your right hand) and one short end (in your left hand)

Step 4 : Pass the long end of the sash under and up through the short end to tie the start of a bow knot. Move this knot to your left hip.

Step 5 : Straighten out the sash that is now around your body so that it is as wide as possible and not creased. Make the knot tight enough that the sash will not fall down but not so tight it constricts your stomach / abdomen. This is the only time you get to tighten the sash so make sure it is OK at this point.

Step 6 : Take the shorter end of the sash between the first and middle fingers of the left hand.

Step 7 : Pass the longer end over the back of your left hand above the wrist.

Step 8 : Grasp the longer end of the sash by putting your hand below your left hand and pulling it lightly to the right.

Step 9 : Let go of the short end with your left hand but do not withdraw your hand.

Step 10 : Using your left hand, grasp the longer end of the sash with your left hand just beyond where the two ends cross.

Step 11 : Using your right hand, put both of the ends of the sash together. This ensures that the two ends stay at the same length and so are correct after step 12. Using a shaking movement pull the left hand back through the loop whilst the right hand holds onto the two ends(shake both ends when doing the pull through).

Step 12 : Turn down the loop and check that the loop of the sash is not longer than the length of the two ends. Ensure that the sash is as wide as possible and not creased or twisted. Also ensure that the grading marks are on the inside surface and so hidden from casual view. If any of these parts are wrong, then redo the sash from step 1.
